A faded driveway does not always need replacing. If the asphalt is still stable, seal coating can restore a darker, more even appearance and add a new protective wearing layer.
The condition underneath still matters. Seal coating looks after an existing surface; it does not rebuild a driveway that is moving, sinking or failing below the surface.
How the treatment works
A thin, water-based asphalt coating is applied over a thoroughly prepared driveway. Once cured, it becomes the new wearing surface and gives suitable asphalt a darker, cared-for finish.
The coating follows the shape and texture already there. It does not replace the asphalt, pavement or base underneath, and it will not make an uneven driveway perfectly smooth.
What changes after treatment
On a suitable surface, the most immediate change is visual. Dry-looking grey asphalt becomes darker and more consistent, so the property looks better maintained.

- Can make suitable fine surface cracks less prominent.
The treatment selected for the surface
We assess the condition and use of the asphalt before selecting the preparation and coating system. A job may include one treatment or a combination of preparation and coating work.
- NZSC Crack Sealing Treatment: separate preparation and sealing for suitable cracks and joints.
- NZSC Asphalt Rejuvenation Treatment: routine renewal for suitable faded or weathered residential asphalt.
- NZSC Distressed-Surface Resurfacing: a heavier treatment for selected aged, ravelled or surface-cracked asphalt.
- NZSC High-Performance Seal Coating: a tougher coating for higher-traffic or more demanding surfaces.
When seal coating may be suitable
Our standard service is intended for existing, bound asphalt that remains reasonably stable. Suitability is confirmed after we review the surface rather than from age or colour alone.
- Residential asphalt and tarseal driveways.
- Asphalt paths and access areas.
- Selected car parks and higher-use paved areas.
- Faded or weathered asphalt with manageable preparation needs.
What it cannot repair
A coating cannot correct failure underneath the visible surface. Applying it over unsuitable asphalt may improve the colour temporarily without solving the reason the driveway is breaking up.
- A weak or failed driveway base.
- Sunken, moving or badly deformed sections.
- Poor drainage or water pumping through cracks.
- Potholes, loose displaced blocks or severe edge failure.
- Structural cracks that need another form of repair.
Why preparation matters
The coating needs a clean, dry and stable surface to bond to. Preparation can include pressure washing, removing organic growth and loose material, treating suitable cracks and allowing the driveway to dry properly before application.
Oil, grease, loose aggregate, moisture and unsuitable weather can all affect the finish. That is why we confirm the preparation and timing for the individual site rather than treating every driveway the same way.
